Volvo Youth ISAF World Championship 2005 BUSAN, Korea (July 16, 2005) — 229 of the world’s best youth sailors representing 46 countries were on the start line for the first race of the Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championships, being held in July 14-23 2005. Three races were scheduled the first day of racing, in very light and testing conditions. Racing was delayed this morning and the first race started at approx 2pm in 2-4 knots of breeze from the southwest. The wind gradually increased and the competitors had more moderate wind conditions for the second race in 8-12 knots of breeze, the wind dropped off for the third race back down to 5-7 knots. In the Laser Radial class, American Paige Railey who just missed out on medals at last years Championship had an impressive first day, with two firsts and a second, therefore is leading the class with 4 points, 8 points clear of her nearest rival Stephanie Rosse from Switzerland. Also in the Mistral Class, Poland who have a strong history of windsurfing at this regatta, Tukasz Grodzicki is leading the boys fleet with two firsts. (July 17, 2005) – Fluky light to moderate winds were the story of this year’s VW Newport Regatta, with 21 divisions competing over the two days of competition. Winners in all divisions but the 420’s and Vanguard 15’s received a free two-month lease on a new Volkswagen Jetta as a prize. There were over 400 boats in the regatta, with the Vanguard 15’s and 420’s being the largest and second largest, respectively. For complete results, please visit Rolex IMS Offshore Championships MAHÓN, Menorca, Spain (July 17, 2005) — After five days of racing off the Menorcan coast, the 2005 Rolex IMS World Championship regatta, organized by the Club Maritimo de Mahon and the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, has come to a close with Santiago Mesa’s Andalucia of Uruguay and Marta Mas Borrell’s Azur de Puig of Spain winning the Corinthian and Non-Corinthian divisions respectively. In the final race, Spanish competitors took both classes with Puerto Calero-Hesperia, skippered by Almedo Morales, finishing first on corrected time in the Corinthian division, and Cam, with Fernando Leon at the helm, first on corrected time among the Non-Corinthians. Both Andalucia and Azur de Puig finished second on corrected time on the final day, enough to secure their overall wins. After a fiercely fought three day sprint from La Rochelle to Portsmouth, the ecstatic BG Spirit crew crossed the finish line at 11.55 (BST), claiming first place on this final leg; a hat-trick for Skipper Andy Forbes and his crew. Barclays Adventurer finished just four minutes after BG Spirit. The next finishers were VAIO, SAIC Las Jolla and Pindar. BP Explorer missed a waypoint just outside La Rochelle, so they had to turn back and round the mark to avoid potential disqualification. Hence they are nearly 100 miles behind the rest of the fleet. After the lost Thursday where there was no wind, the final day was decisive and full of surprises. Team Kenbeek/Brouwer were leading this morning but lost the lead because of a BFDiskwalification in the second race today. Team Booth/Dercksen sailed very well today and climbed from 10 to the second place. Despite rising winds it was not possible to run the final scheduled race but eleven completed meant a decisive second discard. Highlight of the results must be the victory in the open girls event of Emily Dellenbaugh . Emily just happens to be USA Junior (Under-19) champion in the two-person category, sailed in 420s. The myth that young sailors must be forced out of the Optimist to boost their chances in youth boats looks weaker than ever and Emily’s father, the well known “Speed Smarts” expert was obviously smart enough to realize this. The European Girls champion is Emma Oljelund (SWE) who had been at or near the lead throughout the event and, needing a good result in the final race, duly won it to take gold by just two points from Elia Borrego (ESP). In the boys event Jess Lyhne Bonde of Denmark had had a poor second day and looked out of contention. (July 17, 2005) — A spectacular start in moderate breeze sent Roy Disney’s Pyewacket, Randall Pittman’s Genuine Risk and Hasso Plattner’s Morning Glory off to Hawaii shoulder to shoulder in the Centennial Transpacific Yacht race to Hawaii Sunday. Nearly a hundred spectator boats watched the trio of long-striding thoroughbreds -GR is named for a former Kentucky Derby winner- the three fastest-rated contenders in the 75-boat fleet disappeared into the lingering mists of a morning fog lined up left to right in the above order with a clear advantage over 17 rivals in Divisions I and II. (July 18, 2005) — This weekend, over 40 Swan yachts from America, Asia and Europe will be undertaking final preparations for the Rolex Swan American Regatta set to take place July 25-29 in Newport, R.I. Hosted by the New York YC (NYYC) and sponsored by Rolex, this is the 12th time that Swans will join together for a hotly contested series of racing on Narragansett Bay and Rhode Island Sound. The Swans will be divided into four classes with Class A, B and D all racing under Nautor’s Swan Rating System (NSR) and Class C encompassing the competitive one-design Swan 45’s, with nine boats on the starting line. A maximum of nine races is scheduled over five days of sailing, with one discard (if more than five races are sailed). The Regatta Village – based at the Newport Shipyard in downtown Newport – will be a hub of activity, with awards being presented each evening to the overall winner of each class.
