What has already been a busy summer of racing in Newport is set to continue with the New York YC’s biennial Race Week at Newport. The 9-day regatta is split into a handicap series for the first half of the week and one-design racing the second half, with the around-the-island race between them. Several classes are holding their North American Championship at the regatta, including the Farr 40, Farr 395, Beneteau 36.7, and J/109 classes. The Melges 32 class will also use the regatta as its National Championship. The Farr 40 class, which will be holding its world championship in Newport in September, is expected to feature some of the most competitive racing of the week, with an international fleet of close to 25 boats participating. Among those racing are reigning World Champion Evolution, owned by Richard Perini of Australia, and past NYYC Race Week winner and former World Champion Jim Richardson, owner of Barking Mad.Racing in the 18-boat Beneteau 36.7 class is the reigning Lands’ End Annapolis and Detroit NOOD champion Grizzly, owned by Charles Bayer, and the reigning Lands’ End Toronto NOOD champion Zingara, owned by Richard Reid. Other fleets to watch will be the 24-boat J/109 class and the 20-boat J/105 class.This year is also the first to feature IRC racing (which replaces the IMS rule used 2 years ago). The IMS champion from 2004, Dan Myers, will be sailing his Farr 60 Numbers in IRC this year, and returning PHRF champion Andrew Weiss will be sailing IRC as well this year on his J/133 Christopher Dragon.
