Final Beat Decides Skiff Championship

News brief

On Sunday, a well-sailed final beat helped secure victory for Australians Micah Lane (skipper), Jack Macartney, and Drew Waller at the Winning Appliances Australian 18-foot Skiff Championship, a six-race series that took place in Sydney, Australia, over the past six weeks.Going into the last race, Lane was only one point behind skippers Michael Coxon and Seve Jarvin, who were tied for first, and one point ahead of skipper John Winning. When the race began, variable conditions on Sydney Harbor helped to jumble the fleet, with Coxon and Jarvin dropping deep in the pack, out of contention. The series came down to a dual between Lane and Winning on the final beat. At one point on the leg, Winning’s team was two-boatlengths ahead, but Lane’s team ultimately regained the lead to finish second in the race and first in the series. For complete results, click here.
