Class Builder Wins Ensign Midwinters

News brief

Ensign sailors from around the United States converged on Dunedin, Fla., earlier this month to compete in the class’ annual Midwinter Championship.Day 1 saw good breeze, and the fact that the first two races took place in a downpour did little to extinguish the enthusiasm of the 12-boat fleet (especially those from areas where March precipitation normally entails shoveling). After five races, Travis van Neste of Minneapolis, Minn., held a one-point lead over local sailor and Ensign builder Zeke Durica. Thirty-knot gusts cancelled racing on Day 2, but Day 3 was a glorious day for racing, with strong winds, lots of sunshine, and cool temperatures. Durica scored three bullets in the last three races to take the championship. Van Neste finished second and Tom Keesling of Denver, Colo., third. For more about the class, click here.
