By winning both races on Saturday, Ed Baird and the crew of SUI91 won Round 1 of the UBS Dubai Defender Trials, a match racing series being staged by Alinghi at its winter home in the United Arab Emirates. In addition to attracting media attention to the Cup defense, the series has the ostensible purpose of determining the syndicate’s helmsman and afterguard for Louis Vuitton Act 13 in Valencia, which begins April 3.Baird finished Round 1 tied with Peter Holmberg’s SUI64 crew, but won the tiebreaker because he won the last race. Holmberg was over early in that race.”That was a big mistake on my part,” said Holmberg of his OCS, “I had the start won and I got a little greedy. I had set a trap for him to come in there and got a little slow and he came in and hooked me and put me over the line.”Round 2 begins on February 16.For more Alinghi news, click here.
