Maintaining the AC45

It's not a glamorous job, but getting the AC45s ready for the Red Bull Youth America's Cup Selection Series is critical work.

Ahead of the Selection Series for the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup (happening on San Francisco Bay from Feb. 9-15 and Feb. 18-24), members of the San Francisco team American Youth Sailing Force ready the AC45s to be sailed by their potential competitors. AYSF team manager Ian Andrewes (age 22) said, “Yesterday we spliced up a full set of mooring lines and clew strops for the boats, and today we worked on disassembling and rebuilding all the winches on the 45s.”

Take a look at the work that goes into getting an AC45 ready to sail:

The six national teams taking part in the first session of the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup Selection Series (Feb. 9-15) are:
AUS – Objective Australia
AUT – Team Austria
DEN – Danish Youth Vikings
GER – STG-NRV Youth Team
NZL – Full Metal Jacket Racing
RSA – Team i’KaziKati

The second group participating (Feb. 18-24) are:
ARG – Arg Youth Team
GBR – GBR Youth Challenge
ITA – Team Italy powered by Stig
POR – ROFF/Cascais Sailing Team

At the end of the second session, at least four teams will be selected to participate in the Red Bull Youth America’s Cup in early September.
