2011-’12 Clipper Round the World Yacht Race

Ten amateur teams started in Southhampton, England, in July, and have raced to Madeira, Portugal; Rio de Janeiro; and Cape Town. Currently en route to Geraldton, Australia, they'll head to stopovers in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, China, California, Panama, New York, Canada, Ireland, and the Netherlands before returning to England in July 2012. The ten-strong Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race fleet has left one mountain-dominated skyline for another. The yachts and their non-professional crews have set sail from Rio de Janeiro at the start of Race 3 of the 40,000-mile circumnavigation, the world’s longest ocean race. As Sugar Loaf Mountain and Corcovado fade into the distance on the west coast of the South Atlantic, three weeks and 3,300 miles later, Table Mountain will appear over the horizon on the east coast as the teams race towards Cape Town, South Africa. In a lively south easterly breeze, the race started in Guanabara Bay, Rio de Janeiro, at 1400 local time (1700 UTC). It was a case of last in first out as Derry-Londonderry, who finished Race 2 in tenth place, were fastest out of the starting blocks, closely followed by New York, Qingdao, Gold Coast Australia, De Lage Landen and Singapore, all of whom had timed their run to the start line impeccably and, after a bit of jostling, turned across it within seconds of each other. Edinburgh Inspiring Capital approached the line from the far end moments later, followed at the other by Geraldton Western Australia and Visit Finland. Welcome to Yorkshire was slightly delayed as they dropped their sails half an hour before the start and returned to the marina to drop off one of their crew members, Keith Pickering, who had fallen ill and needed medical treatment ashore. The Race Committee held the start line open and the 15-and-a-half minute delay has not damaged the English boat’s chances in the 3,300-mile race as the rest of the fleet had to change their course to avoid a tanker coming into the harbour. 20110927 Copyright onEdition 2011© Free for editorial use image, please credit: Bruce Sutherland/onEdition Gold Coast Australia, one of the ten international teams competing in the Clipper 11-12 Round the World Yacht Race, have continued their winning streak by finishing first in the third stage of the 40,000-mile circumnavigation from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, to Cape Town, South Africa. It is the third individual race victory in a row for the crew, ‘people like you’, led by Tasmanian skipper, Richard Hewson. The 68-foot yacht crossed the finish line in Table Bay against the magnificent backdrop of Table Mountain at 1256 local time (1056 UTC) today at the end of the 3,300-mile race across the South Atlantic. The team had led the fleet for the last eleven days and worked themselves into an unassailable position, which even their very slow progress in very light airs over the last two miles of the course could not damage. The victory has also consolidated their position at the top of the overall Clipper 11-12 leader-board. Arriving in the V&A Waterfront, Richard was thrown overboard by his celebrating crew. The dripping but ecstatic skipper said, “Third time lucky – a fantastic race by all the crew. The finish was very challenging. We had light airs at the beginning and end and some really tough conditions in the middle, so the dunking and the finish really reflected the whole race, I think!” The Clipper Round the World Yacht Race is the only global competition where people from all walks of life can step out of their comfort zones and sign up to race 40,000 miles around the world. They come from backgrounds as varied as marketing executives, nurses, bankers, carpenters, IT specialists, engineers and chief executives who represent more than 40 nationalities. Chichester-based skipper, Olly Osborne, and his international crew arrived in Cape Town, South Africa, at the end of the 3,300-mile race across the south Atlantic from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on Tuesday evening. The 68-foot yacht crossed the finish line in Table Bay against the magnificent backdrop of Table Mountain at 2022 local time (1822 UTC). The team had been in a strong position for most of the race, in the latter stages seeing off stiff competition from the Dutch entry, De Lage Landen. Arriving in the V&A Waterfront, Olly said, “It really was right down to the wire with De Lage Landen hot on our heels for the last week. It was punch for punch and we were more or less equal at the scheds. To be honest I really thought they had us at one stage but we just pipped them today.” Very light airs in the wind shadow created by Cape Town’s unmistakable skyline made for very slow progress for the team in the final few miles as the sun dropped below the horizon and a light sea fog began rolling into the bay.
