Falcon flies under more than 25,000 sq.ft. of sail set off three freestanding 191-foot, 16-ton spars. It sails upwind at apparent wind angles of 33 to 35 degrees and owes much of its sail efficiency to cambered yards, which allows the 5 sails to act as one foil.

Sophisticated Beyond Compare

To provide the power for regal and outrageous 298-foot /Maltese Falcon/, tech baron Tom Perkins and designer Gerry Dijkstra borrowed a pair of concepts from the distant and recent past, and created a rig unlike any other. From our July/August 2007 issue.
