For Terry Hutchinson and the crew on Jim Richardson’s Barking Mad, Key West 2010 will be an integral part of their ramp up to the 2010 Rolex Farr 40 Worlds in April in the Dominican Republic. There’s some new sails to test, a few cobwebs to shake out, and, oh yes, a regatta to win, as well.
/Sailing World/ readers are familiar with sailmaker Chuck Allen as a long-time member of the annual Boat of the Year judging panel. But he’s no slouch on the course. The former college All-America selection will be guiding fellow North Sail’s employee Will Welles around the track as they try to win the J/80 division.
Veteran editor-at-large Peter Isler will be calling the shots for Irving Laidlaw’s 82-foot beauty, Highland Fling XI. The Wally-inspired maxi is the scratch boat in IRC A and will be hard pressed to top smaller more nimble entries. But watch out if they can get a little runway, this beast is a rocket.
What was once primarily a social event to celebrate the end of the ephemeral Nova Scotia summer has become a serious destination regatta for racers from throughout Canada and, increasingly, the world. A feature from our January 2010 issue
