ACWS in Newport: Training Day 1

Yesterday was the Offical Training Day 1 for the America’s Cup World Series in Newport. After an opening press conference, the sailors headed out for some windy practice races. The tension was tangible between ORACLE Team Spithill and Emirates Team New Zealand, for they will be vying for the overall title–Team Spithill currently has a narrow 4 point lead, but that could quickly disappear. Big breeze led to exciting racing, and even a collision with one of the mark boats! Photo Credit: Guilain

Meet the Boat: The AC45

The AC45 is a lean, mean, speed machine. Held down by a crew of five, this 44-foot long catamaran can cruise at speeds of over 30 knots in the right conditions. Designed by the defending team ORACLE Racing, the AC45 has already helped to make sailing a more visual and exciting spectator sport–plus, these boats can each fit into a 40-foot container!
