Chicago–What a difference a day makes. After a day of fog and no racing, Saturday dawned clear and bright over Lake Michigan and the race committees at the 2003 Sailing World Chicago NOOD Regatta presented by Mount Gay Rum put the 263 entered boats through a rigorous four-race day that had most sailors on the water until 6 p.m.
Initially it looked like the weather might not cooperate for the second straight day. The visibility was fine, but the light northerly that blew in the morning faded completely as the schedule time for the first start neared. Fortunately, the breeze proved as persistent as Fridays fog and after a half hour delay it came back to stay, building from 5 or 6 knots to 15 from due north, with a small shift to 350 later in the day.
The most impressive performance of the day was turned in by Brad Boston and Mike Bremer sailing the S2 7.9 Frequent Flyer. After a second in the first race, Boston and Bremer turned on the jets and won each of the final three races and now lead the 15-boat class by 6 points over Don and Jean Bergman. For their efforts, Boston and Bremer won the Hall Spars & Rigging Boat of the Day award.
The J/35 Falcon also put in a strong bid for Boat of Day honors, winning three races in it’s 10-boat class. According to co-owner Mike Welch, the one big mistake of the day came early in Race 3. “We got a good start,” said Welch, who owns the boat with John and Ed Bayer. “But we were using a new sail. We thought we had it dialed in, but we didn’t. We got into a port/starboard situation. They flagged us and we did our turns. We never quite got back into the race.” Falcon passed a few boats to finish seventh in that race and is currently leading the class, but tied on points with J. Lawrence Taunt’s Bad Dog. One point behind is Bob Arzbaecher’s Sociable.

As tight as the J/35 class is, it isn’t the tightest class in the regatta. After four races, three Farr 40s are tied on points for first place with 10 points. Tom Neill’s Nitemare is first with Owen Kratz’s Joss second and Bob Hughes’ Heartbreaker in third. Should either of those three have a bad race, Brian Jackman’s Pendragon, currently in fourth with 16 points, will be waiting to steal a spot on the podium. Other tight races include the Sydney 38/Farr 395 Level class, whether Robin Munden’s Serenissima and Shawn O’Neill’s Eagle are tied for first, the 1D35 class where three points separate the top three boats, the Level 114-123 class where just one point separates the top three boats, and the 21-boat J/105 fleet where six points separates the top five boats.
In the regatta’s biggest class, the 48-boat Tartan Ten fleet, Rich Strilky’s Us is currently in the lead with 13 points. Four points behind is Richard Grunsten’s Voodoo, who roared back after being over early in Race 2 to score a 12th. Grunsten also has two firsts and a third. Richard Stearns’ Zoe is in third with 21 points.
