MARBLEHEAD, Mass.–With temperatures on land soaring into the 90s, there wasn’t a better place to be than on the waters of Massachusetts Bay racing in the Sailing World NOOD at Marblehead Race Week. Though the light southerly never did quite reach the expected 10 to 15 knots, and was quite patchy at times, all 14 classes got in at least two races, with some getting in three.
Joining the Outside Circle, where the International One Designs and the Etchells had been racing since Thursday were the J/105 class, a NOOD staple, and the Star class. The latter, an Olympic class keelboat that dates back to the early 1900s, isnt a regular on the NOOD circuit, but still the fleet showed up with 34 entries for the two-day series. Class veteran Douglas Schofield led the way with two firsts, which earned him a six-point lead over Guy Gurney and the Hall Spars Boat of the Day Award. Normally this award is given out on the Friday of a NOOD Regatta, but because of the staggered schedule at the Marblehead NOOD, which has some classes starting Thursday, some on Friday, and some on Saturday, the boat of the day award was based on Saturdays results. While Schofield has a nice lead, anything can happen tomorrow, especially since its unlikely the Stars will reach the five-race requirement to qualify for a throwout. Lurking in third is Ron Sandstrom and in fourth is Ben Cesare, sailing with former college national champion John Fallon. Despite being over early in the second race, Cesare put together a 6-7 scoreline and is well within striking distance.
After winning all three races yesterday in the Sonar Class, Stewart Neff was only able to take one of three today. Still, Neff was able to stay out of trouble in the other two races–PRO Susie Schneider broke out the black flag today for the second start–and finished sixth and third. Neff has a 10-point lead over Steve Cucchiaro and the Myers/Slattery tandem, both of whom are currently on 17 points.
In the J/24 class the Cressy clan won two of three races, finished sixth in the third, and boosted themselves up to second place, five points behind Mark Toso’s High Five. Friday’s leader, Paul Michalowski, struggled on Saturday with a 4-11-7, and is currently tied on points with the Cressys, but third after the tiebreaker.

In the regatta’s biggest class, the 45-boat Rhodes 19 fleet, it’s Kim Pandapas who still leads, as he did on Thursday and Friday. After a string of three seconds and a third, Pandapas finally won a race today. But he followed that victory up with a 10th, which he was then able to discard. The Trees/McAdoo team is in second, 10 points behind. Conway Felton’s Seguin is in third, two points further in arrears.
Finally in the Etchells, Bill Lynn survived a challenging day of sailing in what many consider the regattas toughest fleet. Lynn took a 16th in the first race–which he now discards–and then a first in the second. He has amassed 20 points through seven races and leads by 12 points over second. From second through sixth, however, is very tight as just five points separates (in order of placing) Andy Giglia, Hitchcock/Heffer, Wade Edwards, Robbie Doyle, and Moulton/Roth. There will be a battle tomorrow to see who winds up in the silver.
