Marblehead, MA – Racing is underway for the International One Design, Rhodes 19, and Town classes at the 2006 Lands End National Offshore One Design (NOOD) Regatta at Marblehead Race Week. Lexington’s Bill Widnall skippered Javelin to two first place finishes in the 11-boat International One-Design class. Local sailor Greg Mancusi Ungaro (Marblehead), whose wife Jennifer is steering her own boat, Eden, in the division, currently sits in second place.In the 31-boat Rhodes 19 class, Kim Pandapas (Marblehead) and Michael Carpenter (Reading) have dominated the competition thus far. In the three races held today, their two boats combined for 13 points-6 less than the next closest boat.Patience paid off in the tightly contested Town class. The boat, skippered by Martha Rice Martini (Beverly), won two of three races today to edge out Second Wind, a boat co-captained by John and Judy Russell of Salem.Entering the fray on Friday will be the Etchells, J/105, Colgate 26, Corinthian, Finn, J/24, Skud 18, Sonar, and Viper 640 classes. In order to accommodate so many one-design classes, organizers divide the racing between three separate courses, Outside Line, Halfway Rock Line, and Tinkers Line.Held in conjunction with the 117-year-old Marblehead Race Week, the Marblehead NOOD regatta runs through Sunday at Eastern YC.
