Neff Perfect on Day 2 of Marblehead NOOD

MARBLEHEAD, Mass.–There are 43 boats registered in the Sonar Class at the Sailing World NOOD at Marblehead Race Week. And of those 43, quite a few are capable of winning an individual race. But today, in the second day of action at the Marblehead NOOD–though it was the first day of racing for the Sonars–there was only one Sonar getting the gun at the end of each of the three races.

“The races were pretty short, so you had to get off the line,” said Stewart Neff, who piloted his Sonar Hup Two to those three wins. “We got off the line with momentum and clean air and in every race we were able to pop out.”

Twelve classes took to the waters today off Marblehead Neck and they were rewarded with some brilliant sunshine, warm temperatures, and a breeze that managed to stay fairly solid throughout the day, even though it always looked on the verge of dying out completely.

“It was a little tricky today,” said Neff. “There was a westerly fighting the southerly.” Figuring out which particular breeze was going to dominate at any one time was just a matter, said Neff, of temperature. The westerly was coming off the hot land, while the southerly came off the relatively cold Massachusetts Bay. “When it got hot, you went right. When it got cold, you went left.”

Of course, even the best wind strategy isn’t worth a whole lot without a good start. Neff had a plan for that too. “People were just parked,” he said. “We just made sure we had a hole below us and to trim in with 20 seconds to go. I had a great middle man, a guy named Greg Dolan, who was always telling me where I was. That made all the difference.”

Second in the class with a 5-2-3 scoreline–one that would usually have you comfortably in front in a 43-boat class–is the Monro/Alott duo on Surprise. Third is Steve Cucchiaro’s Sleuth II.

In the regatta’s biggest class it was Kim Pandapas–continuing right where he left off yesterday–who is leading after four races. The Rhodes 19s sailed two races today and now have run off four over the course of two days. Pandapas hasn’t won a race yet, but then he also hasn’t finished worse than third. This consistency has earned him a 17-point lead over Carpenter/Mansfield . Bill Dalton is two points further behind in third. There are 45 of the venerable small keelboats registered in this regatta.

Paul Michalowski named his J/24 Mojo, and today he had just that. Michalowski finished with a second, a first, and a fourth and is nine points in front of Christopher Clancy’s Fruitcakes. Third is the family trio of Norm, Jon, and Eric Cressy on The Opera Ain’t Over.
