In this article from September 1993, John Burnham writes about the "new" IBM/ Sailing World National Offshore One-Design regattas focusing attention on sailors and sailing venues on the West Coast and in the Midwest.

“When_ Sailing World_ and the IBM Corporation agreed to extend their National Offshore One-Design series from four regattas to six for 1993, the search focused quickly on two metropolitan areas with strong one-design activitiy – Los Angeles and Detroit. Offering to host the events were the long-established Bayview Yacht Club on the Detroit River and the newly sited Los Angeles Yacht Club in San Pedro.

On paper, the newest “NOOD” regattas looked capable of drawing big fleets to their inaugurals, despite dramatically different sailing venues.”
