On the second day of racing at the Sperry Top-Sider National Offshore One Design (N.O.O.D.) Regatta in Detroit, Mich. class leaders were established in the 19 competing classes. After a disappointing one-race opening day, competitors were looking forward to a full day of sailing. Wind cooperated in the 5-10 knot range on all three racecourses giving the Bayview Yacht Club’s race committee the chance to run three races on Circle A and two races on both Circle B and C. For some, the light wind caused some trouble and for others, a little bit of luck was the difference between difficulty and success. “We didn’t have our customary good starts,” said Ed Bayer (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.), the current leader of the J/35 class on his Falcon. “However, we got lucky. We picked a couple of good shifts, we had some decent mark roundings, and in a crowd we came out in front.” Bayer said that his main rival throughout the day was Scandal, owned by Karl Kuspa and Chuck Stormes (Warren, Mich.), which finished third to him at the class North American championship. Falcon had a 1-3 finish going into the day’s last race and Bayer knew he had to do well to keep the lead in the 9-boat class. “We had bad luck at the start and we kind of clawed through the fleet,” he said. “We kept working and managed to catch some shifts. We got closer to Scandal in the first spinnaker run. They came in on starboard at the (leeward) mark, and we came in on port. We picked through the fleet, each of them had something to slow them up. We came through cleanly and found ourselves from fourth to first.” Falcon has six points for the overall lead, while Scandal is in second place with 11 points, followed by Double Shot, owned by William Jenkins (Grosse Point Park), in third with 14 points. The most consistent competitor in the 201-boat fleet might be James Gerometta on his C& 40 Collina in the Warhorse class. As one of two IRC fleets in this year’s NOOD in Detroit, the 7-boat Warhorse class is comprised of somewhat similar boats that sail with their IRC handicap rating, instead of against the exact same design boat. Gerometta strung together finishes of 1-1-1-2 for five points over Hellion, owned by Dane Christy and Dave Lockhart (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.), which has eight total points including the first-place to Collina’s only second-place finish in today’s last race. Titan, the C&C 41 owned by Michael Schultes (Grosse Pointe) is in third with 13 points. In the Ultimate 20 Class, yesterday’s leader American Honour, owned by Eric Vigrass (Port Huron, Mich) continued its winning ways, posting a 1-2 to keep the lead in the 9-boat class over Jim Pearson (Wheatley, Ontario, CAN) in second wth seven points and Mini Me, owned by Cody Hines (Cambridge, Ontario, CAN) in third with 12 points. The C&C 35 Class is still led by Brian Geraghty’s (Grosse Pointe Shores) Siochail with Frank Tenkel’s (Grosse Pointe Shores, Mich.) Bravo in second and Spirit, owned by Jim Bennett (Sarnia, Ontario), in third. Racing concludes tomorrow Sunday, June 3 where the overall winner will be named. That boat will receive a Sunsail charter during the 2007 Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta Championship, in the British Virgin Islands, where they will compete against the overall winners from each stop on the nine-regatta Sperry Top-Sider NOOD circuit.
