Volvo Ocean Race: Chinese Jibes in the Southern Ocean

Three teams report serious crash jibes overnight in the Southern Ocean.

Over the last 24 hours, three of the Volvo Ocean Race Teams—Dongfeng, SCA, and Mapfre—experienced a temporary loss of control in a “Chinese Jibe.” So far, Mapfre is reporting damage on their J2 and mainsail, while SCA and Dongfeng have not made detailed damage reports. This isn’t the first time teams have caught the frightening incident on video—in the 2008-2009 edition of the race, Team Russia caught their crash jibe on video. Two of the teams reported in with video footage of their jibes from last night.
