Orange II Sets Transatlantic Record In crossing the finish line at Lizard Point, England on Thursday, Orange II set a new transatlantic record: 4 days, 8 hours, 23 minutes, and 54 seconds. Bruno Peyron’s 12-man crew set out from Ambrose Light, New York on Sunday morning and maintained an average speed of 28.2 knots for the 2925-mile journey across the North Atlantic. Orange II demolished the previous record set by Steve Fossett despite having to limit its speed after damaging a rudder on Tuesday night. Top U.S. Juniors Headed to ISAF World Championship US Sailing is sending 10 members of the US Youth World Team to represent the United States at the 2006 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship in Weymouth and Portland, Great Britain, July 12-21, 2006. More than 350 of the world’s best young sailors from 64 nations will compete for seven gold medals in the following classes: singlehanded Laser (boys) and Laser Radial (girls), the doublehanded 420 (boys and girls), the RS:X windsurfer (boys and girls), and multihull Hobie 16 (open). “This is the most important international youth event of the year,” said Dean Brenner, Chairman of US Sailing’s Olympic Sailing Committee. “It’s the event where our best and brightest young talent represents the U.S. on the world stage.” For more information on the 2006 Volvo Youth Sailing ISAF World Championship, please visit www.youthworlds.org. Satterthwaite Adds Versatility to Alingi Pit Alingi, current defender of the America’s Cup, recently hired veteran racer Craig Satterthwaite to serve in the runner/pit crew position. Satterthwaite arrives fresh from the Round the World Volvo Ocean Race, which he sailed aboard The Black Pearl with fellow Alinghi crew Rodney Ardern and Curtis Blewett. In 2003, Satterthwaite served as Team New Zealand’s boat captain. The New Zealand native’s vast racing experience gives him a great deal of versatility, both in the pit and on shore.
