American Will Welles and his crew aboard Cougar edged out 68 other J/24 teams to take the World Championship in Newport from September 22nd-26th, 2014. The regatta, hosted by Sail Newport, was spread over five days of racing. The first two days of racing saw a large number of penalties scattered among the fleet, which had a significant effect on the standings. Welles, however, held on to the lead of the fleet through all five days and ultimately came away the leader, with Brazil’s Bruschetta, skippered by Mauricio Santa Cruz, taking second and John Mollicone’s Helly Hansen rounding out the top three.
