Bus Mosbacher

Winning helmsman and strategist
Howey Caufman

Twice defending the America’s Cup-Weatherly in 1962 and Intrepid in 1967-this two-time Yachtsman of the Year excelled in many offshore championships including the SORC, which he won in ’59. Mosbacher (1922-1997) was the dominant skipper in the IOD class for nearly a decade, winning eight consecutive season championships in the 1950s.

His aggressive starting tactics and shrewd strategy made him a formidable opponent. His Cup philosophy is best summarized by a comment in 1962: “This is no democracy. However, I do like to hear any well thought out, reasonable suggestion. Once.”
