A Windless Start to the Finals

Waiting until 7 p.m. was a futile attempt to get a race in for the Women's Hobie 16 fleet at the ISAF World Sailing Games, but there's wind today.

Waiting for Wind

Isaf/world Sailing Games

Yesterday (May 16) was the first day for the Gold Fleets to sail. The Wind didn’t come up until 4:30 p.m., and the fleets went out at 5 p.m. Winds were still very light, but the race committees were determined to race them. The winds were so shifty that places were constantly changing. In the end, our USA Tiger team (Greg Thomas and Jacques Bernier) placed 13th and 15th. Their comments last night at dinner were that they scored more points in one day than they had all week in the qualifying races. The women were sent out at 7 p.m., but the RC sent us back in without a race at 8PM. Needess to say it was a late night for all. After arriving ashore we were told to take the masts down because a cold front was moving through the area. This morning, as we write this, the Gold Fleet is on the water. It is blowing about 15 knots from the west. We are all happier to have wind because that is what cat sailing is all about-speed! Win or lose it’s more fun for all. Susan and I are still in second place and are psyched to get back out there after two days off. The South Africans are a heavier team and love strong winds. The Australians also love the breeze. Susan and I are light, but we have the technique and are ready to rock and roll. More later, but now it’s time to watch! You can follow along at www.worldsailinggames.at -Annie Nelson
