What I Learned

Reduced crew means less gear

Even though I have specified and handled thousands of pieces of safety gear over the years, I was stunned by the sheer volume of the parts when collected in one pile for a race. Add a small duffle for each crew’s personal gear and it’s amazing that any boat has stowage for the load. Category 0 equipment for trans-oceanic races could fill a 40 footer. The next time the temptation to add another crew position comes along, I¿ll only see one more PFD, light, knife, foul weather set, harness, tether¿¿¿
