From weight-saving designs to the transition from wood to fiberglass, Lippincott Boatworks stayed ahead of three decades of change. Article from our January 1997 issue.
At 77, Howard Lippincott is just starting to show his age. Tall and slender, he slightly favors one lag as he walks and admits that years of breathing red cedar dust from his wooden boatbuilding days are taking a toll on his asthma. He's long since retried and has shifted from racing one-designs to cruising a 36-footer. There's little outward evidence that this is the man who, with his brother Bob, formed the backbone of Lippincott Boatworks and helped usher in the modern era of boatbuilding.
