“I remember during a North American Soling Championship laughing at Buddy Melges, becalmed while attempting to move right toward the shore (the shortest rout from the leeward mark back into the southeasterly), as I and the other leaders raced away to the left in the invading lake breeze. Our laughter ceased when we attempted to cross our portion of the persisting intermediate calm and he, in the gradient wind, crossed us from the right to win the race and the series.”
