Meade Gougeon, 2003 Boat of the Year Judge

Walter Cooper

A multihull pioneer and long an ardent iceboat builder, Meade Gougeon is also an avid racer. He won the 1997 DN North Americans and his 35-foot wingmasted tri, Adagio, which he built himself in 1969, has won the Chicago-Mackinac race twice and the Port Huron to Mackinac race three times. This year, Gougeon won the latter on corrected time and was first to finish.

In 1971 Meade Gougeon and his brother Jan introduced WEST SYSTEM Epoxy. He’s retired now from the day to day duties of running Gougeon Bros, but keeps active with his current interest in 15-foot sailing canoes. Gougeon is building five of the 34-pound boats in his Bay City, Mich., shop--out of epoxy, of course.
