Melges 24 Worlds Cruise into Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ, Calif.-- Having experienced a variety of conditions on Monterey Bay during the Melges 24 Pre-Worlds over the weekend, the 58 teams competing in the 2007 Fullpower Melges 24 World Championship took the day off on Monday before the real regatta begins on Tuesday.Chris Larson of Annapolis, Md., driving Scott Holmgren's West Marine Rigging entry, scored a one-point victory over Britain's John Gimson, driving for owner Eamonn O'Nolan, to win the Pre-Worlds in winds ranging from 5 to 23 knots.Only three boats--Larson, 2003 world champion Samuel (Shark) Kahn of nearby Soquel, Calif., and Brian Porter of Winnetka, Ill.--posted three single digit finishes in the four races. All four Pegasus Racing teams finished in the top 10--Kahn in third, Mark Christensen in fourth, Dave Ullman in ninth, and Philippe Kahn, Shark's dad, in 10th.The Worlds will consist of ten races, two each day, Tuesday through Saturday.
