Summer’s Last Light

In October, we asked you to share your best racing photos for our annual Fall Photo Contest. The result? Action shots, wipeouts, tight crossings, dinghies, PHRF, and much more from all corners of the country.

But there can only be one winner, and our top pick is “Summer’s Last Light” from Paul Nelson, aka dinghyman (right). Shot during the last race of the day at the Pacific Coast Thistle Championships, this photo caught our collective eyes with bright and dramatic colors. Editor Dave Reed says, “I dig the illumination of the sails, the shadows, and the backlit effect.” For submitting such a stunning image, Nelson receives gear from the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD regatta series, including a backpack by North Sails, a belt, and a t-shirt.

In second place is Scott Baste’s hardcore Opti-racing shot, “The Hunter and the Hunted,” from Lake Lanier Sailing Club (below). SW‘s Michael Lovett notes, “I like this photo because of the look on the boy’s face. He’s all geared up for racing, and he’s not taking any prisoners.”

Rounding out our top three is Ashley Lacourse’s “Last Wednesday Night Regatta”, taken in October at Hampton Yacht Club in Virginia (below) . Lovett likes that “it succeeds in delivering a wistful, end-of-the-season feeling.” Second and third place receive Dr. Crash calendars.
