2012 SAP 505 World Championship

July 24, 2012

2012 SAP 505 World Championship

With a staggering 188 boats, the 505 fleet employed a gate or rabbit start to give the entire fleet an equal chance during the starting phase. Over six days, just nine races were completed, leading to a tight point spread and ensuring that no place on the podium was locked down until the finish line. The team of Jan Saugmann and Martin Gorge (DEN 8964) snagged a third place in the final race, leap-frogging them into first overall.

The sixth and final day of the 2012 SAP 5O5 World Championship was started with a tribute to 79-year-old 5O5 sailor Jim Berry, who was taking part in his final World Championship after having competed in every Worlds since 1980. Jim lead the fleet out to start area where the day's conditions of a well-established South Westerly breeze allowed the fleet to get away on time.

The race results before the start of the last race were close with it all to play for going into the ninth and final race. KELLNER/SCHOELER were the overnight leaders with a solid buffer and only needed to finish within 14 places of SAUGMANN/GORGE to take the title.

With a clear start PINNELL/MITCHELL took the early lead and extended. KELLER/SCHOELER however didn’t start as well, and were trapped out on the unfavored left hand side of the course.  To add insult to injury, KELLER/SCHOELER lost their spinnaker gear over the front of the boat at the first leeward mark, which dramatically slowed the team down and saw them relegated to 100+ at the next windward mark.

SAUGMANN/GORGE continued to extend and sailed a consistent race to finish in third, with BOJSEN-MOLLER/BOJSEN-MOLLER in second position and PINNELL/MITCHELL winning the race by a 100 meter margin. KELLER/SCHOELER finished outside the top 50 to hand the 2012 SAP 5O5 World Championships to DEN 8964, Jan Saugmann and Martin Gorge.

Race 9 Results:

1.     Ian PINNELL/Ian MITCHELL

  1. Jorgen BOJSEN-MOLLER / Jacob BOJSEN-MOLLER – DEN 9062
  2. Jan SAUGMANN / Martin GORGE – DEN 8964

Two beautiful races took place on day five at the 2012 SAP 505 World Championship. While pond like conditions greeted the fleet at the start of day 5, gradually a very light sea breeze began to build allowing the race committee and the fleet to take to the water.

The sea breeze gradually built to a steady 10 knots to allow Pierre Lemaine and his team to set the first race. Following the gate start the brother pairing of Jorgen and Jacob Bojson-Moller took advantage of the right-hand side of the beat. This paid off and they came out in the top pack at the windward mark rounding.  At the leeward mark their lead looked untouchable after having sailed 60 metres clear of the second and third place boats.

The Danish crew of Jan Saugmann and Martin Gorge were not far behind and and took the second place.

Jan Saugmann, from Denmark, ranked 2nd after 6 races – “Martin Gorge and I formed a new team, our initial goal was to be a part of the top 10. So we’re obviously very happy to be in 2nd place after 6 races.

To get here we’ve tried to always concentrate, to think of nothing except for the race and point ourselves towards the race mark rather than the fleet, which is quite a tricky process.”

On day three of the SAP 505 World Championships variable and shifty conditions have affected the top positions. Breeze of just 8 knots gave light air specialists a chance to monopolize.

The American team of Conrads and Haines took the early lead in the first race of the day.  Team Conrads/Haines win boosts them an incredible 9 positions up the leaderboard to 5th overall.

With a lay day scheduled for tomorrow (Tuesday 24th July) many crews will be making the most of the time by taking in the surrounding area of La Rochelle and preparing themselves for race 6 of the 2012 SAP 505 World Championship - Racing will resume at 13:00 CET on Wednesday 25th July at www.SAP505worlds.com

On day two of the SAP 5O5 World Championship the fleet saw yet another postponement to the racing schedule due to an extremely light South Westerly breeze. Race director Pierre Lemaire had no choice but to postpone the start and hold the 188 boat fleet on the shore to await a steady breeze. The breeze duly filled in at 4pm CET from the North West and the race committee attempted to start the first race. Two further re-starts ensued due to radical 20° wind shifts which occured half way through the rabbit starting procedure.

On day two of the event the current championship leaders Christian Kellner and Martin Schoeler further cemented their position at the top of the overall leaderboard by posting a second place finish in the only race of the day. The German team has shown great form having also competed in the SAP 505 Pre Worlds Regatta in La Rochelle where they finished third.

Results from day 2 were as follows.

Race 3

1.     Peter NICHOLAS / Luke PAYNE – AUS 8901
