Jetboil Cooking Systems

A lightweight camping and mountaineering stove that works wonders offshore, too.

JetBoil Cooking Systems

Tony Bessinger

During this year’s Bermuda Race we discovered a product from camping and mountain climbing that’s perfect for offshore racing, the Jetboil family of lightweight camp stoves. At the core of Jetboil’s systems is their FluxRing technology, which enables Jetboil units to boil water twice as fast as competing stoves, while burning half as much fuel. It’s simply a ring of vanes mounted at the bottom of the pot, which efficiently distributes heat from the isobutene/propane flame to the bottom of the integral pot.We found that the JetBoil we used boiled two cups of water in two minutes. During the four-day race we used it often, but never ran out of fuel. The company states that the personal (PCS JetBoil) boils up to 50 cups (12 Liters) of water from one isobutane/propane micro-canister.The burner and cooking vessel are integrated into a single package, and all Jetboil components and accessories, including fuel canisters, nest within the cooking vessels for space-saving storage. Better yet, assembly and priming are not required: push-button ignition kicks off the flame instantaneously. There are two versions available, the JetBoil Personal Cooking System, which weighs in at 15 ounces, and the JetBoil Group Cooking System, which will heat 1.5 liters of liquid and weighs only 19 ounces. The systems cost $79.95 and $109.95, respectively. www.jetboil.com
