The Fastnet's Storm Force
Ted Turner recalls the infamous 1979 Fastnet Race, which claimed the lives of 15 people and caused the abandonment or sinking of 24 boats. From our June 2002 issue.
Would you know what to do if the wind started blowing above 60 knots in the middle of the night? Ted Turner, who helped Tenacious sail safely to victory in the deadly 1979 Fastnet Race recalls the storm: "The adrenaline was running, for sure, and I was at the helm for more than four hours. It was very difficult to see in the driving rain; at the top of the 35-foot waves, we could occasionally see the lights of the other boats still going toward Fastnet Lighthouse." Read more here.
