Pied Piper and the Big Mac
The Santa Cruz 70 Pied Piper eclipsed the long-standing elapsed-time record for the Chicago to Mackinac Island Race in 1987.
F.X. Roche recaps Pied Piper's record-breaking 1987 Chicago to Marckinac Island Race: "The old record for the 333-mile course, which had stood for 76 years, was held by the 100-foot schooner Amorita, having been set in an 85-knot gale! Piper was able to eclipse Amorita's record by over five hours. A combination of the right boat, excellent crew work and, above all, meticulous preparation, allowed skipper Dick Jennings ot accomplish what some had thought could never be done."
