The Olympic Sailing Committee of US SAILING has announced the dates of its Olympic Sailing Pre-Trials for the nine Olympic classes (eleven events) which have been selected for the 2004 Olympic Regatta. The OSC has also announced the dates for the Pan Am Games Trials. The XIV Pan Am Games will be held Aug. 1 to 17, 2003, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Olympic Sailing Pre-Trials
Oct. 31-Nov. 3—Mistrals at the US Sailing Center-Martin County (Stuart, Fla.)
Nov. 14-17—470s and Lasers at Houston YC (La Porte, Texas)
Feb. 7-9, 2003—Ynglings and 49ers at Key Biscayne YC (Key Biscayne, Fla.)
Feb. 7-9, 2003—Tornados at Miami YC (Miami)
Feb. 7-9, 2003—Europes and Finns at Lauderdale YC (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.)
May 15-18, 2003—Stars at Coral Reef YC and the U.S. Sailing Center (Miami)

Pam Am Games Trials
Sept. 22-25—Lightnings at Metedeconk River YC (Brick, N.J.)
Oct. 5-6—Hobie 16s at the Ramada Plaza Beach Resort (Ft. Walton Beach, Fla.)
Oct. 31-Nov. 3—Mistrals at the US Sailing Center-Martin County (Stuart, Fla.)
Nov. 14-17—Lasers and Laser Radials at Houston YC (La Porte, Texas)
Jan. 4-6, 2003—J/24s at Key Biscayne YC (Key Biscayne, Fla.)
March 21-23, 2003—Snipes at Clearwater Yacht Club (Clearwater, Fla.)
April 25-27, 2003—Sunfish at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron (Sarasota, Fla.).

The winners of the U.S. Olympic Sailing Pre-Trials will receive an entry to the Olympic Practice Regatta to be held in Athens, Greece, in August 2003. In addition, the Pre-Trials Regattas will be ranking events counting toward the 2003 U.S. Sailing Team Ranking System, except in the Mistral class where the Pre-Trials will be the sole ranking event. The U.S. Olympic Sailing Pre-Trials are open to foreign and U.S. competitors, except in the Laser and Mistral classes, which are doubling as the Pan Am Games Trials. With the exception of the Lightning Trials in New Jersey, all the Pan Am Games Trials are currently awaiting final approval by the U.S. Olympic Committee, though no changes are expected. What's all this I hear about water ballast?
What's all this I hear about water ballast?
Dear Dr. Crash, What's all this I hear about water ballast? In my experience it just makes the boat very sluggish and doesn't stabilize it very well. It also makes for a wet and cold day on the water. Soggy in Sandusky
