Dec. 19: The ISAF Combined World Championships are over. The U.S. has brought home three medals, and the hope of possibly even a few more than that from Weymouth in eight months time. We wrap up our coverage of the regatta with a podcast chock-full of future Olympians: Rob Crane explains his remarkable come-from-behind victory in the Laser Trials. Amanda Clark and Sarah Lihan talk about a nerve-racking day on the water in the Women's 470 division. Dec. 15: George Szabo, 2009 Star World champ, checks in to tell us about his regatta so far, his chances for winning the Olympic berth, and the future of the class, which may be participating in its final Olympics in 2012.
Dec: 14: A tripleshot of Olympic interviews: Windsurfer Bob Willis, Laser sailor Clay Johnson, and 470 crew Isabelle Kinsolving Farrar. Willis has locked up a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team. He tells about the moment he realized his dream. For Johnson and Farrar the battle continues and in both cases, it's as tight as it can get.
Dec. 13: Erik Storck checks in after he and crew Trevor Moore blitzed the 49er fleet today and jumped from 17th to second. Amanda Clark and Sarah Lihan didn't have that kind of day in the Women's 470, but they're still pleased with where they stand after four races.
Dec. 12: With the 2011 ISAF World Championships halfway finished—and the U.S. Sailing Team for the 2012 London Olympics coming into focus—U.S. Sailing Team AlphaGraphics head coach Kenneth Andreasen looks back at the classes that have finished and looks forward at the battles still to come. Plus, a few thoughts on Ben Ainslie's confrontation and disqualification (see Mick Anderson's photos here).
Dec. 8: Zach Railey talks about molding his body to fit the Finn and how a few steps backward last summer will hopefully yield some big gains this coming summer. And we check in with women's match racer Genny Tulloch, who is in a dog fight for the top of the Group B round robin, which is good practice considering the obstacles she faces to win the women's match racing berth at those trials in May.
Dec. 7: Dean Brenner's never been shy about sharing his opinion. He comments on the new system for the U.S. Olympic Trials—which he helped create—the prospects of the U.S. in the Star class, why the U.S. Laser team struggled in Weymouth, whether American sailors should sail more in heavy air and what he thinks will be the more interesting battle of this regatta, from an American perspective, of course.
Dec. 6: "But it's NEVER like this here." More than a few Freo locals were surely saying those words today as lightning, rain, and 50 mph wind squalls cancelled racing for everyone but the women's match racing, who got in a few races before the weather soured. In our podcast, we check in with Stu McNay and Graham Biehl, who have the inside track on the U.S. berth in the Men's 470, but after an Olympic appearance in 2008 (13th), they're eager to come away with something more than memories this time around.
Dec. 5: It's Day 1 of the regatta for the Finn, Laser Radial, Men's 470, and Women's RS:X sailors. But the match racers have been at it for two days already. ISAF World Sailor of the Year Anna Tunnicliffe checks in as she aims for a world title, and to earn the United States a berth in the 2012 Olympics.
