Day Two Report

Day Two of the Intercollegiate Sailing Assocation Women’s NAs marked a second consecutive day of domination by the Old Dominion Monarchs. With an overall score of 119 points, the Monarchs are well ahead of host team and defending champ, the University of Hawaii Rainbows, who wrapped up the day with 146 points. Senior skipper Sally Barkow, of Nashotah, Wis., a returning All-American, with sophomore crew Cara Gibbons-Neff, of Annapolis, Md., and junior crew Debbie Capozzi, of Bayport, N.Y., moved from third to first place in A division. Their 50-point total gives them a 14-point lead over Rainbow senior skipper Molly O’Bryan, of San Diego, and junior crew Sarah Hitchcock of South Dartmouth, Mass. Returning All-Americans O’Bryan and Hitchcock topped A division at last year’s ICSA Women’s NAs.

“We didn’t always have the best starts,” said Barkow, “but we were able to use speed to our advantage and finish in the top five in races where we’d started poorly.” Conditions were similar to yesterday’s and the air and water temperature was 80 degrees. Windspeed ranged from 5 to 15 knots, beginning as a southerly thermal, later to be filled in by the northwest tradewinds. “We’re used to sailing in these conditions,” said Barkow. “At ODU, it’s typical for us to get flat water, with lots of puffs and shifts just like what we’re experiencing here.”

Eight races were held in each division, leaving just four races left in each to determine the final champions. B division saw several lead changes until Yale University’s Julie Papanek, of Chicago, and Jennifer Hoyle, of Manchester, Mass., took the lead with 58 points. Papanek and Hoyle have five first place finishes on their scorecard, the most of any team in attendance. Papanek represented the U.S. at the ISAF Youth World Championship in Australia last year. Yale is currently in fifth place overall.

Taking third overall so far and determined to move up are the St. Mary’s Seahawks with 148 points, just two points behind the University of Hawaii. Returning All-America skipper Ali Sharp, of Gatlinberg, Tenn., with sophomore crew Melissa Deveney, of Frederick, Md., and senior crew Sarah McCarron, of Chicago, Ill., are currently in fourth place in A division with 80 points. Junior skipper Jamie Smith, of West River, Md., teamed up with senior crew Leah Anderson, of Larchmont, N.Y., and sophomore crew Genevieve Parr, of Baltimore, Md., to finish third in B division with 68 points. Sharp, Smith and Anderson are returning All-Americans.
