Dan Valoppi/Atlantic Cup
The Class 40s racing in the Atlantic Cup started in Charleston, S.C., on May 11.
The Atlantic Cup's inshore racing conclusion will take place in Newport, R.I., over Memorial Day weekend. You can catch the action from shore on May 25 and 26 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The stakes are high, as the inshore series is worth as many points as the three offshore legs (see photos from the start off Charleston, S.C., here). Six crew per Class 40 will race inshore, compared to the doublehanded offshore racing leading up to the racing in Newport. In addition to bragging rights, the Atlantic Cup offers cash prizes for podium spots.
If you're in town early, the Atlantic Cup is co-hosting a screening of "The Last Ocean" with local film event organizers newportFILM on Thursday, May 23, at Casino Theater. The Atlantic Cup is the country's first carbon neutral sailing race, and this film examines the fishing industry's impact on the Ross Sea in Antarctica. Tickets are $20; snacks from Cafe Zelda, PBR, and Double Cross Vodka cocktails will be available before the film. Here's the trailer:
