Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: And That's a Wrap

Aug. 21, 2008

Sailing World's Olympic Podcast Series: In wet and windy conditions-not exactly the expected forecast-the Star class provides the most exciting race in recent Olympic history. Plus some analysis from U.S. Star representative John Dane.

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: The Tornado and Star close out the 2008 Olympic Regatta. The Brits take their fourth gold, Sweden comes out on the short end of a medal race, again.

Aug. 20, 2008

Sailing World's Olympic Podcast Series: A thrilling Men's RS:X medal race leaves three sailors glowing with pride and one lamenting what he just missed. Plus we speak with Charlie Ogletree who looks back on his team's decision to use a controversial spinnaker that works well in very light air and heavy air, but not in the moderate air in which the Tornado event was sailed.

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: U.S. Sailing Team head coach Gary Bodie to retire at the end of the year. Team GBR misses out on sixth medal by a hair, but still one more chance left to establish their best-ever sailing medal count.

Aug. 19, 2008

Sailing World's Olympic Podcast Series: She didn't make it easy on herself, returning to restart for fear she would be scored OCS. But Anna Tunnicliffe won the first gold medal for the U.S. Sailing Team at the 2008 Olympic Games.

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: Tunnicliffe comes from behind in medal race to secure gold in the Laser Radial. Heartbreak for Sweden's Rasmus Myrgren who is sailed out of the medals by Paul Goodison of Great Britain. Myrgren's only crime was being too close to the lead at the start of the medal race.

Aug. 18, 2008

Sailing World's Olympic Podcast Series: Anna Tunnicliffe will bring home a second medal for the U.S. Sailing Team. The color will be determined in the medal race, as it should be. Plus a recap of the U.S. results from Day 10 of the Olympic regatta and Tim Wadlow tells how it all went wrong for he and Chris Rast in the 49er medal race on Sunday.

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: Anna Tunnicliffe secures a medal in the Laser Radial class. The color will be decided in Tuesday's medal race. It could be the last one for the U.S. Sailing Team. The 49er medal race holds up.

Aug. 17, 2008

Sailing World's Olympic Podcast Series: Zach Railey withstood the worst that Olympic champion Ben Ainslie and Qingdao could throw at him and emerged with a surprisingly silver medal. The U.S. Yngling team didn't fare as well, however. All the action from a crazy Day 9 at the 2008 Olympic Regatta in Qingdao.

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: Well, at least we got in one medal race. It didn't go well for the U.S. Yngling team, which lost its chance at a bronze at the first windward mark. Too much wind has sent the Finns to the docks..

Aug. 16, 2008

Sailing World's Olympic Podcast Series: No wind for the Finns and Ynglings means the medal races will have to wait until tomorrow. But plenty of other action to report on. We speak with Charlie Ogletree about the Tornado class and John Dane, who is leading the Star class after 3 races.

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: Zach Railey and the U.S. Women's Yngling team go for the medals today. Here's a break down of what each needs to go to take home a token from the 2008 Olympic Games.

Aug. 15, 2008

Sailing World's Olympic Podcast Series: Zach Railey played his throwout-race card today, sailing French Finnster Guillaume Florent back in the pack and putting himself into a stronger position for Saturday's medal race. With a little luck the U.S. team could have two medals in hand by 4 p.m. tomorrow. But nothing in guaranteed.

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: Sailing in his first Olympics, Zach Railey pulled a veteran move today. While his 19th place finish in today's only race, was his worst of the regatta by far, it actually served to pad his lead and move him into a commanding position with just Saturday's medal race remaining...

Aug. 14, 2008

Sailing World's Olympic Podcast Series: Halfway through his tenure as the chairman of U.S. Sailing's Olympic Sailing Committee, and halfway through his first Olympics, Dean Brenner looks back at the sailing so far, and what's ahead for the U.S. Sailing Team in the next week and the next four years.

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: The Code 0 lives. The American Tornado team has chosen to use its controversial upwind spinnaker. They'll be praying for light air. Also a Rule 69 hearing in the Finn class and the worst smog and wind conditions so far postpone the start of racing on Day 6.

Aug. 13, 2008

Sailing World's Olympic Podcast Series: Eleven Races on Day 5 of the 2008 Olympic Regatta, and six were won by American sailors. Tim Wadlow and Chris Rast won three, while the Laser, Yngling, and Men's 470 teams all scored individual wins. Interviews with Wadlow and Rast, Graham Biehl, Andrew Campbell, and Sally Barkow.

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: The U.S. Sailing Team rules the waters of Qingdao, winning more races today than all the other teams combined. The team is in the medal position in three classes, and within striking distance in another two.

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: And on Day 4 He created algae. Actually it's been showing up on the course for the past few days...

Sailing World Podcast Series, Another day, another American in the thick of the medal race. Anna Tunnicliffe played it safe during Races 1 and 2 of the Laser Radial class and her reward is a 1-point lead. For the rest of the U.S. team the news wasn't so good. We talk with Tunnicliffe, Laser sailor Andrew Campbell, and Robert Scheidt, who is going for a fourth medal in the Star after winning three in the Laser.

Aug. 11, 2008

Sailing World's Olympic Podcast Series: A tough day for the U.S. Yngling and 49er teams. However, for one team that is tempered because they're still in the thick of the medal race.

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: U.S. Team Struggles on Day 3, But Finn and Yngling Teams Firmly in Medal Race

Aug. 10, 2008

Sailing World's Olympic Podcast Series: Zach Railey talks about his move up the Finn standings from second to first. Plus John Lovell on the controversial upwind spinnaker that has some of his opponents in the Tornado class steamed.

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: Some thoughts on skinny sailors, Rule 42 violations, and racing in light wind/big tide conditions.

Aug. 9, 2008

Sailing World's Olympic Podcast Series: Zach Railey and Carrie Howe talk about Day 1 of the Olympic regatta and about being on the opposite sides of some random shifts during the course of the day.

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: Just received this news brief from the U.S. Olympic Committee. Awful, awful news that's sure to put a damper on the first day of the 2008 Olympics...

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: After a slight delay that may or may not have been more related to communications issues on the race committee boat, the first day of the 2008 Olympic Regatta went off quite smoothly...

Aug. 8, 2008

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: Hey, wait a minute, this isn't so bad. Blue sky and a light breeze in Qingdao. But is trouble looming in the Tornado fleet?

Aug. 6, 2008

Stu's Qingdao Olympic Blog: One of these days we'll get a second sailor-Ralph C. Craig did the honors in 1948-to carry the flag for the opening ceremonies for the United States Olympic Team...

Sailing World's 2008 Olympic Podcast Series: Finn sailor Zack Railey and Yngling helmswoman Sally Barkow speak about Saturday's first races of the Qingdao Olympic Regatta.
