Melges 20 Nationals

16 Melges 20s descended on Newport Harbor for the 2014 Audi US Melges 20 National Championship

This past weekend, 16 Melges 20s descended on Newport Harbor for the 2014 Audi US Melges 20 National Championship, hosted by Sail Newport in Newport, RI.

Overall winners Portobello, consisting of owner/helm Cesar Gomes Neto, tactician Andre Forseca and John Bowden, became the first non-U.S. team to claim the National title. “I only got into the fleet about a year-and-a-half ago and it has been amazing to be a part of,” said Neto at the awards ceremony. “Many thanks to everyone who has helped us and supported us, most especially my crew.”

While the majority of the fleet struggled with tricky, variable conditions on the inside race course in Newport Harbor, Portobello had no trouble posting three second place finishes to take the overall lead after the second day of racing. ©2014 JOY | IAM20CA
The last race of the second day saw the steadiest conditions with 8 kts. Shortly after the gun, the fleet split left, center and right, and each team seemed to be searching for any advantage across the course. ©2014 JOY | IAM20CA
