What's all this I hear about water ballast?
Dear Dr. Crash,
What's all this I hear about water ballast? In my experience it just makes the boat very sluggish and doesn't stabilize it very well. It also makes for a wet and cold day on the water.

Diving!
Our annual Turkeybowl race in Sandusky Bay. Gusty shifty winds mostly from the direction we needed to go to get back resulted in some poor jibes.

Checking the centerboard for weed.
Sometimes I am a little too enthusiastic in ensuring that there is nothing wrapped around the centerboard and slowing me down.

Hard to recover from here!
Yes that head does belong to the legs, and is still attached via a contorted body. The legs were 4 inches shorter than the day before and so missed the toe straps. Back to normal length now.

Killer "B" Race version Bluenose Sloop Sunk in 80km winds
Dear Dr. Crash: I am having second thoughts about my open cockpit race version Bluenose Sloop. I know Roue' is Canada's most respected yacht designer and the yacht was originally designed with an open cockpit, but the McVay version self draining cockpit one that I also own made it through the 40 knot winds while the former did not.
What should I do? Stop sailing in winds past 25 knots? I can hear my Nova Scotia cousins growling at the thought as I type these very words.

Forklift Launch goes bad
Forklift spills boat into river
CHELSEA – An oversized forklift placing a boat into the Hudson River at the Chelsea Marina on Front Street in the Town of Wappinger flipped forward Friday, dumping the craft into the water.
Initial reports had said a crane had overturned and landed on a boat with one person trapped inside. But, when emergency services personnel arrived on the scene, they determined no one was injured and the incident involved the forklift.

Andrew Spencer, sailing on Zingara in the Nantucket Opera House Cup, managed to keep his Irish Viking Hat on during the whole race. Too bad he was not able to keep HIMSELF on the boat for the whole race.
