Rock Hard Landing
Rock Hard Landing
In iceboating it's not how far you have got go before you hit the water, it's a question of how much it will hurt when you do. Taken February 2011 on Mecox Bay, Southampton,New York. Helmets are crucial in surviving to sail another day.

What's all this I hear about water ballast?
What's all this I hear about water ballast?
Dear Dr. Crash, What's all this I hear about water ballast? In my experience it just makes the boat very sluggish and doesn't stabilize it very well. It also makes for a wet and cold day on the water. Soggy in Sandusky

Hanging In
Hanging In
A photo of me, frustrated, trying to right my Laser in Great South Bay, Long Island.  My mast was stuck in a good four feet in thick, black mud, and it took nearly 20 minutes to get right-side-up. Thankfully, no damage was suffered except for a slightly bent lower section, and I enjoyed a fantastic day of Laser racing with other members of the JSA of LIS.

Please stay on the windward side of the boat!
Please stay on the windward side of the boat!
During a small puff the windward hull lifted and the unprepared crew slid across the boat, resulting in a decrease in righting moment, which increased healing, and the crew's position to leeward, which decreased righting moment and increased healing and.... It finally became necessary to abandon ship.

Calamities of the Vendée Globe
The nonstop solo around-the-world race has been called the "Everest of the Seas." Like Everest, the Vendée Globe takes prisoners. As the miles left to the finish diminish, so do the number of boats in the race.

Forklift spills boat into river CHELSEA – An oversized forklift placing a boat into the Hudson River at the Chelsea Marina on Front Street in the Town of Wappinger flipped forward Friday, dumping the craft into the water. Initial reports had said a crane had overturned and landed on a boat with one person trapped inside.
