The sun shone throughout, the temperature, even on the water, crept toward 80, and the infamous San Francisco Bay Area sea breeze was inconsistent and mild, by local standards. But for many of the sailors competing in the 2002 Sailing World San Francisco NOOD, especially those in the Farr 40 fleet, the exquistely beautiful day was the silver lining on a dark cloud. Saturday night, while running near his house in Lafayette, Calif., Farr 40 owner Mike Condon died of an apparent heart attack.

August 30, 2002Season Series Titles on the Line at San Francisco NOODby Stuart StreuliSAN FRANCISCO—Sean Bennett and Rich Bergmann’s Zuni Bear came into the 2002 Sailing World San Francisco NOOD Regatta on a roll. A few weeks ago, at the San Francisco YC’s Summer Keelboat Regatta, Bennett and Bergmann closed out the event with a trio of firsts. The duo started the San Francisco NOOD, which is hosted by the St. Francis YC, in similar fashion, winning the first race today on the Berkeley circle. “This is our second full year together,” said Bergmann, who handles the cockpit duties on the J/105 while Bennett mans the wheel. “It’s really coming together.
