July 25, 2002Thunderbirds Make Their NOOD Debutby Stuart StreuliMARBLEHEAD, Mass.—Mention the word Thunderbird to most sailors and it’s likely to conjure up images of a classic sports car, or maybe hazy, regrettable memories of some cheap wine and the resulting hangover. But for racers competing in the 2002 Sailing World NOOD at Marblehead Race Week there’ll be another image to add to that incongruous duo: that of a 26-foot hard-chined sailboat with an enormous mainsail and an interesting cast of characters piloting them around the course.

July 25, 2002SAILING WORLD NOOD AT MARBLEHEAD RACE WEEK SAILS INTO SECOND DAYby Cynthia GossMarblehead (Mass.) July 26, 2002 -- The Cressy name is one that figures often in the history of the Sailing World NOOD at Marblehead Race Week. Norm Cressy of Marblehead--who is sailing his 54th Race Week this year--remembers the many phases of this 113-year-old event, both in its glorious hey days when hundreds of boats competed, and when participation slid to thinner ranks. But Cressy stayed with the event through all its guises--and has taken so many wins at Race Week that he has likely lost count. But this year, it is another Cressy’s turn to shine.

July 24, 2002Thursday: Five Classes Kick Off Marblehead NOODby Cynthia GossMARBLEHEAD, Mass.—Sailors tune the rigs of their boats just like musicians tune their instruments. But when sailors tension their stays and reposition masts, they are not looking for pitch: they are looking for speed.
That is exactly what Bruce Dyson--a Marblehead sailor who has taken best-performance trophies at this regatta in both 1999 and 2001--was all too well aware of as he sailed into the start of this 113-year-old event on Thursday. -

October 30, 2001Winds and Competition Pick up Pace at Sailing World NOOD at Marblehead Race Weekby Cynthia GossMarblehead (Mass.) July 27, 2001 — In sailboat racing, there is such a thing as a sailing widow or a sailing widower, when one half of a couple lives for sailboat racing and the other half lives for anything but. Except in the Rhodes 19 class.Husband-and-wife crews are a common sight in this 19-foot sailboat competing at the Sailing World NOOD at Marblehead Race Week. Today, at the second day of Race Week, race results proved this combo works.
