Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta Overcomes Slow Start to Complete Races

The rain held off for the better part of the day, but unfortunetly so did the breeze.

Overcoming a morning fog postponement, the sun prevailed over Massachusetts Bay to commence the second full-day of racing in Marblehead for the Sperry Top-Sider NOOD Regatta. A very light breeze showed up on the Bay to spark racing from nearly every boat class.

Building on his momentum from yesterday’s first-place finish in the Sonar class, Local Skipper David Curtis posted another 1-point score today to maintain the class’s top slot. With the two consecutive first-place finishes, MumboJumbo has placed itself in position to claim an overall fleet victory during tomorrow’s final day of competition.

Curtis, who first competed in Marblehead Race Week in 1958, stated, “We’ve had really light wind, probably as light as we’ve ever raced in. But you deal with what you’ve got off the starting line and our strategy has been to go to the right, and that’s worked out for us both times.”

The Regatta’s largest class, the Rhodes 19, was able to complete races for the third consecutive day. The highly-competitive division has seen top-tier racing from a handful of boats, with a strong local contingent vying for the victory tomorrow. Among the field of locals is the boat Chilli, which is manned by a family of three generations of Marblehead residents, including Skipper Henry Peper along with son-in-law Tommy Tompkins and grandson Buck Tompkins.

The final day of racing for all boat classes is Sunday, July 29 starting at noon. Overall class winners for the Marblehead event will be determined at the conclusion of Sunday’s races.
