The Brits Are Out, So Is One Italian Team, but…the Russians Are Coming

by Stuart Streuli

Synergy team manager Maxim Logutenko says the Russian team is interviewing design teams with catamaran experience to jump start a campaign for the 34th America's Cup.

While others tell BMW Oracle Racing, "Thanks, but no thanks," regarding their dramatic remake of the America's Cup, Synergy team remains on course to become the first Russian team to contend for the Auld Mug.

TeamOrigin’s decision to not pursue a campaign for the 34th America’s Cup is disheartening. Recent quotes from team principle Sir Keith Mills echo what many worry will be a majority opinion about BMW Oracle Racing’s vision for sailing’s grandest trophy: It’s your sandbox, and you’re entitled to make up the rules, but we just don’t think this will fly. Good luck.

TeamOrigin Bows Out of 34th America's Cup

by Stuart Streuli

TeamOrigin is the first of the established teams to decline BMW Oracle Racing's vision for the future of the America's Cup.

Their response to the catamaran annoucement a few weeks ago could best be described as tepid. Now TeamOrigin has made it official, the stocked British team, which recently brought in ex-Alinghi design coordinator Grant Simmer to run the show, will not be contending for the 34th America's Cup.

More information will follow, this quote from team principle Sir Keith Mills, was distributed by team PR.

Hall of Fame Ushers in New Era With 2010 Class

by Stuart Streuli

Team New Zealand and Alinghi teammates (left to right) Murray Jones, Simon Daubney, Dean Phipps, and Warwick Fleury were honored at the America’s Cup Hall of Fame Induction presented by Rolex Watch USA. Also inducted into the hall were Mike Drummond and Halsey Herrshoff.

The 2010 class of inductees into the America's Cup Hall of Fame is full of trimmers, strategists, navigators, and bowman, and devoid of tacticians or helmsmen. It's about time.

What would the Pro Football Hall of Fame be if it only included on its list of honorees quarterbacks, coaches, and general managers? Woefully incomplete is probably a good place to start.

The America’s Cup Hall of Fame was suffering from a similar problem, having filled its walls over the years with skippers, tacticians, designers and campaign managers while all but ignoring the draft horses that make sure the skilled laborers in the back of the boat can look as smart and talented as they do when winning a Cup race.

History is on Their Side. Is Anything Else?

by Stuart Streuli

The switch to catamarans has already inspired one unexpected challenge. Plus how you can help San Francisco's bid to host the 34th Cup.

Russell Coutts mentioned more than once last Monday that the BMW Oracle Racing's revolutionary changes for the America's Cup (see here and here) would inspire syndicates not previously involved with the Cup to challenge. Well, an email that arrived at Sailing World world headquarters this morning backs up that claim.

Thoughts on a Game-Changing Announcement

by Stuart Streuli

Russell Coutts and Larry Ellison have launched a brave new era of America's Cup sailing. What exactly it will look like remains to be seen. Here are a few thoughts from Monday's press function in Valencia and a conference call with Coutts.

Sometimes, gathering news in the America’s Cup arena feels like a game of poker. You spend much of the time looking for everyone’s tells and trying to determine whether what’s coming out of his or her mouth is the truth, the spin, or something more nefarious. Of one top sailor, a fellow journalist once told me, “If he agrees with you, and laughs, he’s definitely lying.”

Louis Vuitton Trophy Series to End in 2010

by Stuart Streuli

The January 2011 Hong Kong stop is cancelled. Will a November event in Dubai be the swan song for the World Sailing Teams Association? For Louis Vuitton as an America's Cup sponsor?

Have we seen the end of the Louis Vuitton Trophy Series? Of the World Sailing Teams Association? Today's press release from the WSTA (in full, below) announces that preparations for a January 2011 LVT stop in Hong Kong have ceased. The Dubai event, slated for November, is still on, but is ominously called the "last regatta."

More Details on BMW Oracle's Video Tests

by Stuart Streuli

The America's Cup defender outlines the upcoming monohull vs. multihull tests that will help determine the class for the 34th America's Cup.

The latest press release from BMW Oracle Racing regarding the upcoming TV trials in Valencia, Spain. The presence of longtime Alinghi strategist Murray Jones is interesting. Jones, like Brad Butterworth, Simon Daubney, Warwick Fleury, and Dean Phipps, was a part of Russell Coutts inner circle when he and Ernesto Bertarelli build Alinghi in the 2000 and 2001. Like many Alinghi employees, he's probably looking for his next job. In addition to his skills as a sailor, he's also a top-shelf mast designer.

San Francisco Stands Alone

First it was San Diego, which was summarily dropped from the competition to host the 34th America's Cup last week. Now Newport, R.I., has fallen by the wayside. But San Francisco must still fend off a handful of international candidate cities.
