Writing research papers about Sailing

Sometimes a professor would allow students to write a hobby or something that they are very familiar with as a topic for their research papers. These kinds of papers are a big help to students because they would be able to write something that they themselves consider interesting and worth writing research papers about.

One of the lesser known hobbies that could be used for a topic in research papers is sailing. Sailing is the art of controlling a boat primarily through the means of shifting large fabric sheets called sails and harnessing the energy of the wind. The problem with writing research papers about sailing is that a student may run out of things to discuss about this certain hobby.

To help alleviate this issue, here are some suggested topics about sailing that may be good for research papers.

1. History – The research papers could focus on the history of sailing. While a hobby to most, sailing has actually helped advanced many civilizations. Explorers such as Arab, Chinese, Indian and Europeans, have been able to get longer voyages into regions with extreme weather and climatic conditions because of sailing.

2. Sailboats – The research papers could also focus on sailboats. There are different kinds of sailboats such as fractional rig sloops, cutters, sloops, schooner, yawl and catboats and the writer can try and discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each type.

3. Sailing techniques – The research papers could discuss sailing techniques. While not exactly writing a training manual, the paper could try to talk about the proper ways in handling a sailboat as well as the physics and other rationale behind such sailing techniques.

Christine N. Johnson is a English professor for a high school class in California. During the summer or on weekends when she’s not busy with checking research papers or exams, she drives to sailing spots all over the country in order to immerse herself in her favorite hobby of sailing.
