The HLK Story and Plea
The HLK Story and Plea
Report AbuseMy name is Sarah, and I'm part of a non-profit sailing organization in Galveston, TX. HLK, named after Harris L. Kempner, has been running since 1987. Started by Mike Janota, the club used borrowed boats in Galveston to teach youth the great sport of sailing. It was in 1990 that the club became an offical non-profit organization and could have boats donated. For a while, club boats were moored at the Landings Marina on Offats Bayou, until the number of boats grew to be too many. HLK was able to use five slips donated by Ron Landry, and the rest of the boats were scattered around Galveston. It wasn't until 2003 that Texas A&M University generously granted the club a permanent location on Teichman Road. It was there that club members built a marina. Since then the club has sailed Offats bayou every week.
After Hurricane Ike, however, that all changed. Before the storm, the club had eight boats, three Ranger 26's, one J-24, and three bigger boats which were sailed in offshore races. They also had a couple of canoes, a laser, and four Europe Dinghies. All was lost in the storm, aside from the four Dinghies, which were stored with members. The club shed and a recently added attachment to it blew away completely during Ike, leaving behind not a trace.
Since the storm, we have had two boats donated to the club, and have recently been able to once again begin our weekly sailing routine. It's a slow and difficult process, but we are starting to rebuild our club again and get back into the groove.
We would greatly appreciate any help or donations you can give. We are particularly trying to find gear for our Europe Dinghies. Only one of the four has everything it needs. All we have of the other three are hulls, so we need sails, daggerboards, rudders, the works. We are willing to pay shipping on anything you would donate to us.
I appreciate your taking the time to read this, and I hope to get some of your responses. If you'd like to read more about the club, you can visit out website at http://www.geocities.com/hlksailing/home.html (sorry if it's a bit out of date). Smooth sailing!
