    110331_Race2_Start
The start of Race 2 of the International Rolex Regatta featured a starting line skewed to port, and then a very short port-tack fetch to a mark. Was the race committee was into the martinis early? Nope, that's business as usual at the IRR where most of the races are done on random-leg courses. It was crazy at times for the author and his teammates on Phil Lotz' Swan 42 Arethusa (far right), but it was also a lot of fun.

    Giraglia Rolex Cup (Saint-Tropez)
Nearly 200 international yachts flocked to this sun-kissed town to celebrate the Giraglia Rolex Cup's 60th anniversary this year. The regatta is aptly nicknamed "Queen of the Mediterranean," both for its historic roots and its magnificent scenery. Oh, and the fierce conditions and competition that await the daring competitors.

Esimit Europa 2 smashed the race record by over three hours, completing the 242-nautical mile race from Saint-Tropez, France to Sanremo, Italy, in just over 14 hours. Read more in our Finish Line forum.

The 16-boat IC 24 fleet at the IRR enjoyed tight one-design racing, with 17 races over 3 days. The IC 24 places an open cockpit on the hull of a J/24. Only the jibs are used. It's become very popular in the Caribbean.
