Winter Photo Contest Results

Steve Lapkin's winning photo shows an Elliott 6 Meter team in the heat of battle.

related tags: Contests

Among the more than 500 submissions to Sailing World's Winter Photo Contest were stunning images of racing throughout the world, from the Great Lakes to the Florida Keys to Australia. The winning shot captures an intense moment during the 2010 Rolex Miami OCR: Lucy MacGregor's British team executes a snap jibe during a match against Anna Tunnicliffe's American squad. Although Tunnicliffe edged out MacGregor for the regatta victory, all was not totally lost, as Steve Lapkin, the photographer who snapped the shot, takes home the contest's grand prize, a pair of Puma foul-weather jackets courtesy of Ronstan.

Thanks to everyone who submitted photos. The judges were editor Dave Reed, senior editor Stuart Streuli, associate editor Michael Lovett, associate art director Dave Norton, and photographer Marianne Lee. Stay tuned for our next contest.

First Place

Contributor: Steve Lapkin
Title: "2010 ROLEX Miami OCR, Jan. 30"
Steve Lapkin's Description:  "TEAM (Lucy) MacGregor (GBR) and crew vs. TEAM (Anna) Tunnicliffe (USA)."

Judge's Comments:
"I could see this photo on a Wheaties Box. The power girls. It's a good action shot. It's great to see everything that's going on, including some facial expresssions."-Marianne Lee

"This photo does a great job of stopping the action during a critical point in the race. The details-skipper throwing the main, middle crew trimming the chute, forward crew adjusting the twings-give you a great sense of the teamwork taking place. There's just a lot to see in this image."-Michael Lovett

Second Place

Contributor: Gretchen Dorian
Title: "Iceboat Racing-Renegades"
Gretchen Dorian's Description: "Northwestern Ice Yachting AssociationRegatta, January 29-31, 2010, Lake Winnebago, WI (Oshkosh), Renegades. It was a lot of fun!"

Judge's Comments:
"This photo has nice composition and color." -Marianne Lee

"It's hard to convey a sense of movement with iceboating photos, but this one does it well. It has great depth  and ey-catching colors. We seriously considered this image for our April issue." -Michael Lovett

Third Place

Contributor: Steve Lapkin
Title: "2010 Miami Grand Prix, Finale"

Judge's Comments:
"This image has what I call the "barbershop effect," like you're looking into a mirror that's reflecting another mirror. The subject in the foreground just seems to repeat infinitely. It gives you a sense of the vertigo Melges 32 skippers must feel as they approach the starting line." -Michael Lovett
