Announcing Sailing World's Sick Day
Announcing Sailing World's Sick Day
On August 25, we're calling in sick and going sailing. You should, too.
Here at the Sailing World editorial office in Rhode Island, we’re expected to take off and go sailing as much as possible (shhh…don’t tell corporate). Actually, it’s sort of an unwritten job requirement, i.e., you gotta go sailboat racing to know sailboat racing.
So, yes, when it comes to sneaking out and going for a sail, me and my editorial teammates, Stu and Mike, are lucky enough to not have to perfect that call-in cough or craft the brief e-mail with the subject line: “working from home.”
At some point over the past few years, our sick days got lumped in with “personal days,” and I’m fine with that, because there are plenty of times when I’m not hacking mucus or praying to the porcelin, but I am in need of some mental health. Like anyone else, I do need to get out and blow off the steam, and take my mind elsewhere. Personally, I can’t think of a better way to vent my stress than going sailing (a good surf is on par, but on the East Coast, the surf isn’t exactly reliable). When sailing, the windier it is, the quicker my anxieties melt away, like bubbles in the wake streaming off my transom.
And, like afternoon naps and two-martini lunches, we’d all be the better (and more productive) by taking full advantage of our sick days. Science has proven this to be true—at least the studies I’ve read.
So what do you say? Are you up for a little—cough-cough—sick day this summer? Right about now I know I am.
Our friends in the marketing department at LaserPerformance (the geniuses that came up with their “Sick Day” ad campaign), came up with this brilliant idea, and we’re shamelessly taking their idea and running with it. I’m calling out for a national sailing sick day.
Now, I understand a sick day is supposed to be an impromptu sort of thing, but just to make sure we’re all on the same page, on the same day, I’ve designated Wednesday, August 25, 2010 as Sailing World’s official sick day. Come on out and join us.
Call, e-mail, or text the boss (or if you work for yourself, text yourself) and tell them you’re not coming in. Go sailing—try something new, something fast, crazy or radical, or peaceful and slow if that’s your remedy.
Of course, I want to know how you spent your sick day (and promise not to tell your boss what you were really doing). Post your story, load your photos to our galleries, or drop your videos into our player. Make sure to label them "Sick Day." We’ve got prizes for the Sickest Video, Sickest Photo, and the Sickest Story, and a few more incentives to come.
So join us on August 25. Call in sick, and make it sick day.
How to share your sick day:
