The Wetass Chronicles by Tim Zimmermann

image-tz thumb
Tim Zimmermann, a freelance writer, cruises and races on the Chesapeake Bay. He has also sailed all over the Atlantic, the Med, and the Caribbean, and is prone to depression if his ass isn't getting wet on a regular basis. His Wetass Chronicles covers anything and everything fun, fast, or exciting in the world of sailing. Read full bio

Annals Of The Once Improbable: Circumnavigating The North Pole

by Tim Zimmermann

Global warming has opened up a brand-new Arctic racecourse, writes Tim Zimmermann in "The Wetass Chronicles."

Say what you will about the perils of global warming, it is opening up some bizarre adventure-sailing possibilities as what was once ice becomes water.

Case in point No. 1: There are two (not one, two!) sailboats currently sailing around the Arctic Ocean, hoping to circumnavigate the North Pole in one season, via the Northwest and Northeast Passages.

The “Youngest Ever” Roulette Wheel Is About To Start Spinning Again

by Tim Zimmermann

Tim Zimmermann introduces Laura Dekker, the latest teenager to set out on an offshore record attempt.

Just when you thought all the teen solo silliness might be over, just when you started to think you might not be hearing about the Sunderlands for a while (how can they NOT have a reality TV show?), Zac Sunderland goes ahead and gets himself arrested. Hopefully, that won’t be grist for another round of armchair moralizing over teenage judgment, and its suitability for round-the-world sailing.

Shake It Up

by Tim Zimmermann

A YouTube video has inspired the author to slow down and enjoy the view outside his window: Maryland's Rhode River.

SW blogger Tim Zimmerman resolves to revisit the cruising side of his sailing identity.

Last week, I thought my sailing life was in order. Over its course, I have cruised all over the Atlantic coast, England and Ireland, the Caribbean, and the Med; sailed across the Atlantic; and raced to Bermuda as well as around the buoys on any number of other people’s boats in the Annapolis area.

The Route du Rhum Goes Big in 2010

by Tim Zimmermann

With the addition of a fleet of G-class multihulls, the Route du Rhum—singlehanded across the Atlantic—is making a bold play for the title of World's Most Extreme Sailing Competition.

Forget all the America’s Cup chatter. Pay not much mind to the Volvo Ocean Race. The single most exciting sailing event on the visible horizon is the Route De Rhum. Why? For the first time it will be open to G-class multihulls.

Forget Versus and ESPN: The Future of Broadcast Sailing Is Online

by Tim Zimmermann

The Virtual Eye command center in Auckland, New Zealand, provided in-depth video coverage of Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland in March.

SW's Tim Zimmermann cites the live video coverage of Louis Vuitton Trophy Auckland as a shining example of how sailing should be broadcast. Click on this story to link to live coverage from La Maddalena.

I don’t usually pay much attention to the sailing world’s endless navel-gazing about how to make sailing more attractive to a wider audience (“What we really need is yachts that sail at 90 knots and blow up when they cross the finish line!”), or how to Save Sailing.  I don’t really give a damn about trying to appeal to disinterested, video-obsessed teens or NASCAR motorheads, particularly if it means turning the sport inside out or groveling before the Great Gods of TV. I love to sail.

Adventure Lost

by Tim Zimmermann
image-124-100511 Watson
Jessica Watson

Jessica Watson will soon become the youngest sailor to circle the globe non-stop and by herself. But modern technology has taken much of the challenge out of this once superhuman feat.

When Jessica Watson set out from Sydney, Australia, last October to sail non-stop around the world, solo and unassisted, I was—how shall I put this?—extremely skeptical. It wasn't her age—just 16—so much as her inexperience, though that is age related. It didn't help that she collided with a freighter before the start. I thought her parents were idiots.
