The Great Laser Practice-Sail Brouhaha

by Tim Zimmermann

Knockoff sails may not be class legal, but they're gaining undeniable momentum in Laser fleets nationwide.

Quick: what’s the most successful, stable, one-design dinghy class in world history?

Answer: the Laser, of course, now rolling past 200,000 boats worldwide. In fact, in celebration of this milestone, you can win a new boat with the iconic 200000 sail number

The Southern Ocean Will Now Take Center Stage

by Tim Zimmermann

This month, some three dozen iron-willed sailors—scattered throughout the Barcelona World Race fleet, Jules Verne record-attempts, and other competitions—will battle the Roaring Forties.

It’s possible to get sick of winter weather (and here in the Mid-Atlantic, more is on the way). But I don’t think it’s ever possible for any sailor to ever get sick of the Southern Ocean or the Jules Verne (unless, of course, you're actually in the Southern Ocean, where, by the time you reach Cape Horn, I expect you're thoroughly tired of the Southern Ocean).

The Sublime Pleasures of Frostbiting

by Tim Zimmermann

As the weather gets colder, the racing heats up for Laser sailors in the Potomac River Sailing Association.

When most people envision a perfect sailing scenario, they think of warm breezes and T-shirt weather. I like that, too, of course (you gotta go to Cabarete, if this is your ideal). And, sure, most of the sailing world right now is coming down off their warm Key West high, feeling all smug and superior.

Even Rowers Have Multihull Mania

by Tim Zimmermann

In the world of offshore rowing, two (or more) hulls may prove to be faster than one.

Well, if the America’s Cup has gone multihull, there’s no reason the rest of the boating world can’t do the same. For decades, ocean rowers have slogged their way across the seas in monohulls of one sort or another. (I know, I don’t get it either, but there's no accounting for taste, or masochism, apparently.) And they have suffered, died, and set records doing it.

Put Down Your Egg Nog and Tune In

by Tim Zimmermann

The Barcelona World Race, which starts Dec. 31, gives sailing fans reason to cheer in the New Year.

In October, I just came out and ordained that the Route Du Rhum would be the best race of 2010. Well, technically, there's another race that could compete for that title, but just barely—because it starts on December 31.

If You're a Wetass, You Should Care About the Oceans

by Tim Zimmermann

The Pacific Garbage Patch is just nasty; here are a few ways we can clean up the mess.

We all love to sail and spend time on the oceans. We love to look at crazy videos of kiteboarders doing 50-plus knots in ditches, and read about eccentric misanthropes who take to the oceans in seek of adventure. But sometimes I wonder if we all care enough, or do enough, to protect the oceans that provide all this wetass amusement. I'm pretty sure the answer is we don’t, since the oceans are in pretty bad shape.

An Ordinary Woman on an Extraordinary Voyage

Let's drink to the salt of the earth

Route De Fun, I Mean Rhum, Is Ready to Blow You Away

by Tim Zimmermann

This singlehanded, transatlantic challenge is the most exciting sailboat race of the year.

Back in June, I inked a big old X on the sailing calendar: the start of the 2010 Route Du Rhum. The reason was simple. It will hands-down be the most exciting sailboat race of the year, and it starts this coming weekend.

The Velux 5 Oceans Is Here. The Velux 5 Oceans Is DOA.

by Tim Zimmermann

Here's a radical new plan for a struggling ocean race.

You may not be aware of this (and it wouldn’t surprise me at all), but there is a solo, round-the-world race starting this weekend. It’s the Velux 5 Oceans race (formerly Around Alone, formerly BOC). It bills itself as “The Ultimate Solo Challenge,” which is highly arguable (Vendee Globe, anyone?).

Forget the Cup: If You Want Speed Thrills, Look To Luderitz

by Tim Zimmermann

On a custom-made canal in Namibia, kiteboarders and windsurfers are hitting speeds well in excess of 50 knots.

Follow the 2010 Luderitz Speed Challenge in SW's Finish Line forum.
